Technology in teaching foreign languages

– Repeat after me… –

The technology in teaching foreign languages has evolved, but not in the technique of teaching by itself. It is now only more accessible thanks to modern communication means. Before the widespread of internet, the only way to learn a language was in a language school or lab. I remember teaching adults with “conques” (the inventors made up this name) equipped with a microphone and speakers. It was a fiberglass shell the students would fit against their torse and over their ears. They repeated sentences to perfectly hear themselves and feel their bones’ vibration. It was a technique originally designed for the hearing impaired. Quite a clever invention, in fact, because people don’t hear exactly what they pronounce when talking. This “conque” returns them the exact sound in their ears. Therefore, they can easily correct their pronunciation.

You can relate to that when you record your voice and listen back to yourself. Sometimes you don’t even recognize your own voice because the vibration of your bones gives you another listen.

Technology in Teaching Foreign Languages

– Communication is key –

Those days are over. Now with internet, you can find many language schools online. But just learning a new language by taking lessons is not enough. It is obvious that you need to practice speaking it to become fluent, and especially you need to make sure you don’t lose it. You also need to realize that speaking the English you have learnt with an American or British accent, will be quite different from the English spoken with an Australian accent. So, the only way to master the spoken language in a specific region, with its regional vocabulary and accents, is to practice speaking it with a local. The technology in teaching foreign languages doesn’t have any way to achieve this yet.

Culture Chat offers you that possibility with our worldwide Cc Guides. You can book any of our guides in the language of your choice. You will be connected via a one-to-one video Cc Session and you can ask any questions you may have about the region. If you wish, you may just have a casual conversation and simply practice speaking to enrich your vocabulary while improving your accent. You’ll make swift improvements in no time!
